My sister Bianca Merkley is an amazing singer songwriter. We were driving to Salt Lake City from Boise in the craziest windstorm (75 MPH winds!) and saw the most amazing fields blowing in the wind. I looked at her. She looked at me. Then, we hoped out of the car and unraveled our kite! With my camera in one hand and the kite in the other- we took turns frolicking through the grass with the kite. I could not stop giggling! This just might be an idea for her new album cover. Mom vs. Photographer

As a mom I know the feeling of wanting just the right family photo and wanting at least one photo with smiles. As a photographer I know the reality... sometimes it doesn’t happen on command. Some of the most beautiful photos can be those capturing a moment without anyone looking at the camera. However, I find myself torn with wanting those smiley photos and also wanting those candid in the moment photos of my family. You just never know what you will get. Last fall, my husband snapped a few of my son and I together. Needless to say, Nixon is not a smile-on-command type of kiddo... But this photographing mama still loves him.

My "inspiration walk"

As many of you may know, I am a counselor and have my own private practice Live Inspired Counseling. I absolutely LOVE to use photography in the work I do. Photography is an AMAZING tool- It not only captures a person’s point of view of the world at that moment but it helps them see outside of themselves and become aware of the beauty right in front of them.

So on occasion we’ll go for an “inspiration walk” where we walk around for ten minutes shooting whatever pops out to us- then we talk more about the emotions or thoughts that come about when we look at the images. I usually have them title their work with the first thing that pops into their mind. It's fun to see what comes and can give insight on how it makes the person feel about what they are seeing.

It’s amazing the things you will find if you just stop and look at everything existing all around. I often wonder what it's story is? Why is there a t.v. or washer sitting outside in the rain or what is the story of the soda metal thingy (what do you call that?)- and how did it get there? Here are a few things that I stopped to take notice on my inspiration walk last week- it was raining which made it even more awesome!

Ok...so it has been awhile. A LONG while...I know...and due to my slackerness my computer is busting out of the seams with photos that need to be blogged! So, in attempt to clear some space and check in with ya'all I am going to give you some quick wedding updates starting in no particular order for the next several weeks.

Here is Jess and Mick! These crazy love birds are both law students living in San Diego and both so laid back and easy going that I absolutely LOVED- LOVED working with them! And I must say that Jess is the sweetest girl ever- she is always laughing and having a good time! Thanks you two for being so easy to work with and allowing me to capture such a fun wedding!

My top five favorite things about their wedding:
1. The peacock feathers and colors they used (some of my favorite colors)
2. The cute kids who were not camera shy
3. Watching Jess and Mick laugh at each other and themselves
4. Watching everyone enjoy themselves in the photo booth
5. Watching Jess and Mick listen to the sweet things their friends and family had to say about them during the toasts (I got a little teary not gunna lie)

So, while I was in Colombia I was walking with my sister and came upon this scene. I saw each boy at one end of a puppy as they tried lifting him.

I couldn't help but snap a few shots. They discovered me with their wide grins and I continued to watch them play.

Then I watched them wrestle, kiss, hug, and "play" with their little best friend.

Was this dog being tortured?

...but then I got a closer look and could see how happy he was to have his new little friends. I guess too much attention is better then no attention right?

It was pretty cute. A man's (child's) best friend...no matter where you are in the world.

On our sweet road trip to Oregon we noticed that there was NOTHING but I mean NOTHING but road for miles! So, naturally, we did what any couple would do and decided to take a break. We carefully set my camera on the hood of the car and began to shoot sequences of us dancing and jumping in the deserted road. So, this photo led to another photo…

and then 50 shots later we got this lovely shot!

I think we only got one good photo of us BOTH up in the air. All in the name of PHOTOGRAPHY.

Okay- so, this post may seem like I am obsessed with my dog...but I do love dogs in general...and have been visiting my dad in Bogota, Colombia for the past week and was listening to some Cat Stevens as I gazed out the window of a bus at the passing green farmland... Cat Stevens just seemed to fit my mood and this song came on. It made me miss my dog...his name is EL Guapo (the handsome one)

The three-year-old window.

When working with a three year old…there is always a window…if you blink…it’s over.

This is Chloe…she is a spunky three-year old who loves the camera and I LOVED taking photos of her last November.

We started strong…she posed…trying to put her foot up against the wall (adorable) and was what we say in Spanish- Pura modela (pure model) Note: I am in Colombia right now so my mind is thinking Spanish.

Once the window of time was up...we knew it was time to change it up.

It was uncomfortably cold for the poor little Nena (once again…Spanish on the brain) So, we had to pull out the good old bag of tricks…TICKLE MONSTER.

After three INSANE years…graduation arrived this May. (this is a little late I know) For the last three years, I have been working on my Masters in counseling and hope to incorporate art and photography in therapy to provide an outlet for young people to be able to express themselves. Art/photography seems to capture a feeling that words can not do justice and I love being able to use photography in my work.

So, I am now free... free at last...from homework checklists, vending machine dinners, extra strength deodorant (worn on exam days), and juggling… juggling my insanely busy life. I am a FREE woman!!! So, my new years resolution…(oops-beginning in July) is to clean out my external hardrive and desktop ( both can’t seem to hold another image) and post these “forgotten photos"… and I mean posting often. I want this to be a place you look forward to visiting and escaping through photos and simple thoughts. I love hearing from you so- PALEEESSEEE leave comments!

How beautiful those red, white, and, blue colors floated carelessly through the streets of downtown New York City. It left an impression... watching those people scurry to keep up with their only point of reference...your flag. It remiinded me how grateful I am for our nations freedoms. Below are a few of my personal works from my trip to India. Oh how I love what I do! The wedding ceremony was three days long!!! So, editing is still in the process and photos will be up real soon I swear! The photos above were taken of me on a reflection of a large silver vase...I thought it was interesting to see how different angles would distort my image. This represents to me the different perspectives a photograph can bring. Enjoy the photos!

Sometimes I wish I could just be a fly on the wall...okay maybe not a fly...a butterfly and watch and listen to people pass me by. I absolutely love love shooting editorial shots! I am so intrigued in what people are doing, what they are thinking, and/or how they are feeling. I could sit and people watch for hours...with my camera of course. So naturally, I was in heaven wandering through fruit markets and side streets snapping photos of every day life. I have to say thanks to a fellow great photographer friend of mine who encouraged and inspired me to get up, close, and personal with the people of India. Thanks Ahyak!

Simplicity

Why is it that children who seem to live such simple lives tend to be so joyful? We met several blissful kids who loved getting their photo taken and would gather around me giggling as they saw their image looking back at them. Their eyes always seem to be so genuine and real. Maybe that is why I love capturing their authenticity! It reminds me of where my passion for photography began as I was a young girl traveling to orphangages with my family. I took photos of the children and would have them developed to give to them as gifts. When I looked at the images I shot, their struggles, joys, and fears shined through in their eyes. It was as I was staring into their soul. Then the best part- watching their faces as they clutched on to their gift, the only photo they owned. It was priceless. That is where the love for photographing people began.

New year. New baby.

With the new year comes new life. So, I thought about posting something pertaining to new life. Guess who's feet these belong to? I will give you a clue...I shot his mommy recently when she was pregers... she hardly looked 8 months pregnant... ring a bell. Scroll down to see his momma.

Meet Kaden, Brandi's newborn son. He was born on November 7th, 2008 at 9:50 am and weighed all of 6 pounds 12 ounces with a length of 20 3/4 inches. What a gorgeous child! He came over and I couldn't believe how precious he was with his full lips and natural tan. What a little model...I mean seriously don't you think he is celebrity baby material! So, cute!

He loved to make this face...I think he knows how dang cute he is!

Okay- so, I haven't been quite on top of the blog liked I had promised...but I have a good excuse! I traded the snowy storms of Boise for the sunny beaches of Maui. Mmmmmm...it is just what I needed to recharge my batteries for another blissful year. With my camera by my side (of course), I couldn't wait to capture a little bit of paradise and bring it back to you! So, here is the view from my lens to yours. Pure paradise. That's what is so great about a photograph- it acts as my own personal paradise when it gets really cold! I am still in denial about the cold and am continuing to wear my flip flops despite the cold temperature!

Okay...it has been FOREVER since I last wrote on this blog. But I am officially DONE with this semester in graduate school!!!! So, I thought it was time to check in with y'all and update my poor neglected blog :( So, I hope you are ready for some photo madness... be ready for PHOTO OVERLOAD! This belly belongs to the tiniest little pregnant lady I have ever seen. She told me her secret (besides great genetics) was to eat healthy non-processed food during pregnancy. I made a note to that because she looked so adorable. Can you believe she is 8 MONTHS pregnant in these photos??? So, who does this petite pregnant belly belong to?

Today is the big day that Brandi and her family have been waiting for. Today she will finally get to meet her newborn baby for the first time! I have been thinking about her all week and woke up this morning excited to post her photos to celebrate this day! Wow- so many emotions today for her I am sure as she now begins her journey of motherhood and the joy that it will bring. Brandi I am thinking of yah today and congratulations! This is Jen- She is one of my bride's who is spunky and daring enough to do a fun and funky wedding photo shoot. This girl is not afraid to get dirty and to have fun! You can just see her spunk shining as the camera captures her enthusiasm! She has been so fun to work with and I think she looks gorgeous!!! This is some of the first photos of the photo shoot as I was warming up...something was missing...accessories!!! So, Camilla hooked us up with a really cool chunky necklace!

What a huge difference it made to add some color to all the white- and get accessorized! Don't be afraid to splash color by throwing on a fun bright necklace or heels when doing your photo shoot!

Urban Idaho?

Well since we were down town already, I thought we should shoot around there. I am a big fan of "urban photos"- photos taken in the city. I just love cool old brick buildings and narrow passage ways. So, where does one find such an atmosphere here in Idaho?... That is my little secret... I like to it call my little piece of " Urban Idaho."

I am really into BRIGHT colors and loved finding these walls.

Okay some cool news... Treasure Magazine (which is put out by the Idaho Statesman) featured a wedding that I shot this January. This very photogenic couple, Ben and Christine, were chosen to be featured in their October and November Bride Section! I was so excited to open the magazine and see 15 photos I took splashed throughout pages! It is a beautifully written article featuring the work and excitement that made that special day happen for Ben and Christine! They even have tips and ideas to help out any couple who are planning on getting married. I believe it begins on page 33 and continues to pageg 37. If you can't get your hands on the hardcopy of the magazine here is the link to read the article without most of the photos- but still a great read for brides to be!

This summer's trip to Venezuela.

This summer has been extremely busy with weddings, magazine deadlines, visiting family, and graduate school. But one of my most memorable moments of the summer was traveling to Venezuela to shoot photos for a documentary my husband was in charge of. It was through traveling to Latin America where the love for photography really developed into a passion when I was younger...so, I felt as if I was going back to the root of my passion this summer. It was AWESOME!!!! The documentary was about Hepatitis B in Venezuela and I got to tag along and shoot photos for their promotion pieces. It was awesome! We traveled to a small villages and filmed people and their stories about the battle of their illness. it was a whirlwind summer trying to meet deadline after deadline but so well worth all the experiences I had. I thought I would post a few of my most memorable moments So, here they are:

Another really memorable time was visiting the families who lived in grass huts and lived a very simple but happy life. I have traveled the world to various indigenous places but have never seen houses made with this kind of material and I loved capturing the different traditions of their village.

A little girl was eating what at first I thought was worms, but then I found out it was pasta and beans.

This man put on his hat and rounded up the children and we watched as they danced and sang.

Something that left an impression to me was watching this mom feed her child. She just had a sweetness to her and it was clear that motherhood has presence all over the world. It was sweet.

While Brooks was filming, I was walking around snapping photos and came upon to these cute girls. They were shy and serious ...

...but they faces lit up when I showed them their image on the screen of my camera.

I love that they picked flowers and placed them in their hair and started to model for me as if they were on America's Top Model. It was awesome. I will be sending them these photos so they can have and keep forever!

Well, people often wonder what photographs a photographer has hanging on her wall. In their minds they envision breathtaking landscapes, exotic travels across the globe, or even a fabulous airbrushed family portrait hanging over the mantle. So, not exactly what I have in my house. The latest artwork that ordains my living room wall (I like to change it up often) are three large square photos of my boys wearing white shirts and red ties: Bentley, Brooks, and El Guapo that is. My husband and I like to come up with fun things to photograph and got carried away one Saturday while I wasn't shooting a wedding! Yup we are dorks! Just thought I'd share!

There are moments that I find myself tearing up during the weddings I shoot. This wedding was no exception. I am a sucker for daughter-daddy moments (I am a daddy's girl) and I snapped away when Denise and her dad embraced as they shed tears of joy. It was a sweet moment.

My eyes watered again during the toasts. Denise's sister began her talk expressing her love and admiration towards her sister...and ended tearing up and it became difficult to understand her words. I don't think there we a dry eye in the room! I can relate to sister love...I feel the same about both of mine! Another sweet moment.

Meet Haley and Isaac. I know these two through my church and was honored to take Isaac’s newborn photos…okay well semi-newborn…I believe he was like 2 or 3 months in this photos.

Hands down, Isaac was one of the happiest babies I have ever taken photos of thus far. He was so smiley and just loved smiling at his mama! I think we only shot like 20 minutes worth of photos and we were done. There were hardly photos of him not laughing or smiling!

He was sure to tell us when he was done smiling and having his photo taken!

So, we finished it off with a few pics of his toes and feet! We couldn’t resist

I really have loved getting to know Haley and now Isaac this year- Isaac you’re adorable!

Guapo was adopted from the humane society, so, his birthday is unknown but estimated to be sometime in April...so as we approach the end of the month...it was time to celebrate his birthday! He is now officially a one-year old and still very much acts like a puppy! So, in celebration of his birthday... I took him out back and shot some pics with his birthday hat on. He is so adorable! He always seems to love the camera and sits there and just stares at it! (okay okay well when I have treats or a squeaky toy in my hand) He gave me many different expressions to work with! I just had to say:

Well, Boise is confused with it’s weather…but the grass is beginning to green and flowers are beginning to bloom…so, I thought it was time to announce my new session idea. When I was a little girl, there was nothing better than running around barefoot in the grass and twirling in my favorite dress! Sometimes, I would very carefully put on my ballet slippers and leap around with flowers in my hand pretending I was a princess fairy. Last fall, my mother-in-law came up with the idea of doing a “fairy session” with my little niece McCall. She was a very busy two-year-old and I followed her around as she ran around in her little costume hardly looking up at the camera! But that is what made it so much fun! In fact, it was sooooo much fun that I am now offering to do “Fairy Photos.” So, contact me if you are interested in booking a shoot this spring/summer! The night before there was a huge blizzard and I remember being worried about the drive up…but the storm cleared and the next day there was a blanket of pure white snow. These photos were taken this fall when we went to my husband’s best friend Kelly’s wedding. I thought I should take my camera to shoot some of their photos when they came out and give them as a wedding gift but it came to the rescue when their photographer was M.I.A (missing in action) after their ceremony. So, they asked if I had my camera on me…um I just happened to have my camera…well of course I did…come on do I go anywhere with out it?? So, I was able to take their family and candid photos and give it to them as their wedding gift and come to the rescue when they needed me to. Good thing I haul my camera everywhere…now my husband can’t tease me about it anymore! ;) hahaha… I just never know when I am going to want to stop and snap a photo- so better be prepared than sorry!
